Last year we secured copies of WDTH's FCC Application Records from their archives. Think of these as a timeline from WDTH's beginnings to its end and as a new beginning as WDTH FM owned and opperated by the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota. Interestingly the records are rather detailed as far as what transpired during WDTH's commerical radio days and leading up to its new beginnings as a community radio station owned by the University of Minnesota and later having its call letters changed to KUMD.
This document shows what transpired during WDTH's beginnings as a "New-FM" to a legally operating commercial broadcast station on the FM broadcast band. Note the equipment chosen to build WDTH and those who were involved in its beginnings.
More operation and contact information. Here would go any additional changes or modifications as well as requests to the FCC for providing additional services like Subsidary Communications Authorization also know as "Sub-Carrier Authority." FM's had "extra-band width" for alternative programming to be broadcast on their sub-carrier frequencies. For WDTH it was 67 kilocycles. The programming could have been their "beautiful music" operation that they sold to businesses who had waiting rooms or for their staff to listen to during the day. A special antenna and receiver was required to be able to use this service. In its day it was a bit pricey. Think of it as the "pre-high definition days" of FM radio!
Note here the major changes of ownership and license renewal that was now going to become part of the University of Minnesota owned radio stations. The station would go "dark" as a commerical fm station in August of 1974. It would later sign back on in 1975 as "WDTH FM 103" community radio of the University of Minnesota Duluth. The station records now show that the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota now were the owners of WDTH.
