Funky 40

Yes it is true, WDTH actually had a music survey called "The WDTH Funky 40 Suvey". From what we have been told by those in the "know" they didn't produce a lot of these because of the expense involved. The station really didn't have much of a promotions budget so these were made up when there was money or someone cut a deal to trade commercial time for printing services.

These were distributed around to record shops and other business around the Twin Ports. If you look at the shot of the inside of the survey you'll see that some of the songs were not at all "Top 40" which makes this a unique survey compared to the music surveys that listed the "Top 40" songs for a given week that other stations in Duluth would publish. How they determined this list is uncertain at the moment, but maybe someone will see this and send along some information as to what method was behind the "madness."

Note the "This Weeks Highlights" and some of the dj's that are mentioned here. The scribbiling is from the person who sent these images of the survey to us Tom Oakes. Tom was a teenager when he got this survey. It's his notes that you see on the pages. Thanks to Tom for sending this on to us. Tom later went on to be a broadcaster himself and is now a V.P. with a broadcasting company in Alaska.

If you look carefully enough you can see what was "hot" at WDTH back in 1973. We plan on having a show featuring this survey in the very near future. Looking for all of these songs may take a while as some of them may not even be out there anymore on any of the pay for music web sites on the internet.
